Lasmid Biography: Friday Night, His Highly Spiritual Music Exit and the Sweet Songs 4 You EP
In 2022, a song called “Friday Night” began spreading across Ghanaian TikTok feeds and went on to top music charts across the country, turning Lasmid, a former reality-show contestant from Takoradi, into one of Ghana’s most talked-about young artists. A year later, he walked away from the record label that had helped build his early career.
Lasmid, born Ladsmid Nathaniel Owusu, is a Ghanaian musician, rapper and songwriter from Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region.
He performed under the stage name Charger before adopting the name Lasmid, and is best known for his 2022 single “Friday Night” and for winning Season 8 of the MTN Hitmaker talent competition.

Early Life
Lasmid was born in Takoradi, in Ghana’s Western Region.
He had his primary education in a village near Dunkwa, also in the Western Region, and later attended Takoradi Technical Institute for his secondary education.
He developed an early interest in music performing within his local community before entering national reality-television competitions after finishing senior high school.
MTN Hitmaker and Signing with Highly Spiritual Music
Lasmid won the eighth season of the MTN Hitmaker talent competition on December 14, 2019, receiving a recording contract worth GH₵120,000 as his prize.
Following the competition, Ghanaian producer Kaywa, born David Kojo Kyei, brought him into his label, Highly Spiritual Music, in an arrangement that, according to Kaywa’s later public account, began as a one-year production deal tied to his Hitmaker win rather than a conventional long-term signing.
Friday Night and Breakout Success
Lasmid built his early catalogue steadily, releasing songs including “Atele” in 2021 and a remix of “Sika” featuring fellow Ghanaian artist Kuami Eugene in 2022, which helped raise his profile.
His breakthrough came later that year with “Friday Night,” which went viral on TikTok and topped several Ghanaian music charts.
He followed it in December with the single “Running.” His momentum carried into 2023, when he won New Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and “Friday Night” was nominated for Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards.
Leaving Highly Spiritual Music
In June 2023, Lasmid parted ways with Highly Spiritual Music, becoming the second artist to leave the label within weeks, after labelmate Mr Drew’s own exit.
Kaywa confirmed the departure in a radio interview, saying, according to Citi Newsroom, “Lasmid expressed his desire to leave the label even before the VGMA ceremony.”
Reports at the time cited differing explanations for the split, including a disagreement over revenue sharing; Kaywa later said in a separate interview that he and Lasmid had wanted to continue working together but that outside pressure from within the industry contributed to the parting.
Sweet Songs 4 You and Recent Work
Since leaving Highly Spiritual Music, Lasmid has continued to release music independently, including a 2024 collaboration, “Maria,” with Nigerian artist TML Vibez.
The pair built on that partnership with a joint six-track EP, released as Sweet Songs 4 You (also credited in some listings as Special Songs For You), described by both artists as a cross-border fusion of Ghanaian and Nigerian sound.
Discussing the project with Rolling Stone Africa, Lasmid said the tape was meant to reflect the growth of African music more broadly, adding, “This tape is West Africa on a wave.”
In July 2026, a fan-curated retrospective mixtape, “This Is Lasmid,” compiling highlights of his catalogue, was released by a Ghanaian DJ.
