Jeff Celentano Biography: From B-Movie Actor to Directing The Hill and Blackwater Lane

For much of the 1980s, Jeff Celentano appeared in low-budget genre films such as American Ninja 2: The Confrontation, Puppet Master II, and Demonic Toys, billed under the name Jeff Weston.

Four decades later, he directed The Hill, a Dennis Quaid-led theatrical biopic that grossed $7.6 million at the box office, and followed it with the Lionsgate horror release Blackwater Lane.

Jeff Celentano, born May 24, 1960, is an American film director, screenwriter, producer and former actor. He is best known for directing Gunshy (1998), The Hill (2023), and Blackwater Lane (2024).

Early Life and Acting Career as Jeff Weston

Celentano was born and raised in Pemberton, New Jersey. At 21, he left New Jersey for New York, where he studied acting with Stella Adler and later became a long-time student of Sanford Meisner at The Neighborhood Playhouse.

Working as an actor under the name Jeff Weston, he appeared in film and television including American Ninja 2: The Confrontation, Puppet Master II, Demonic Toys, and Robert Altman’s The Player, alongside guest appearances on shows including Magnum, P.I.

He has said that working with Altman on The Player, and befriending film editor Gerald Greenberg, whose credits included Kramer vs. Kramer and Scarface, pushed him toward directing.

The Move to Directing

Celentano directed his first short film, Dickwad, in 1994, which won several festival awards for best comedy short and helped him secure financing for his first feature, Under the Hula Moon, released in 1995.

Reflecting on the shift from acting in an interview with CanvasRebel Magazine, Celentano said that directing gave him creative control that acting had not, adding that “great storytelling sense is everything.”

He also spent years as an acting teacher, serving as Executive Director of Drama at The Performer’s Academy in Southern California.

Building a Career in Genre and International Films

Celentano’s 1998 crime drama Gunshy, starring William Petersen, Michael Wincott and Diane Lane, won him the Best Director award at the Atlantic City International Film Festival.

He went on to direct Primary Suspect (2000) and Moscow Heat (2004), then made two films in Russia, including the romantic thriller Say It in Russian (2007), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and starred Faye Dunaway, Rade Šerbedžija and his wife, Musetta Vander.

He directed the crime drama Breaking Point in 2009, with a cast including Tom Berenger, Armand Assante and Busta Rhymes, and the film Glass Jaw in 2018.

The Hill (2023)

Celentano’s highest-profile project to date is The Hill, a biographical sports drama about baseball player Rickey Hill, who played four seasons of minor league baseball despite a degenerative spinal condition.

Deadline reported that Briarcliff Entertainment acquired the Dennis Quaid-led film in January 2023 and set it for a wide domestic theatrical release; it opened in theaters on August 25, 2023, and went on to earn $7.6 million at the box office.

Speaking to Spectrum News ahead of release, Celentano described his intentions for the film, saying, “This is not a sports movie.” He also described working around new industry safety rules following the fatal shooting on the set of Rust, saying his production digitally added baseballs in post-production so that pitchers could throw without any object in hand.

In a separate interview with Pop-Culturalist, Celentano said he had long searched for a story like Rickey Hill’s, recalling his reaction to reading an early draft: “I read the first draft and cried like a baby.”

Blackwater Lane (2024)

Celentano’s next film, Blackwater Lane, is a supernatural horror thriller based on B.A. Paris’s novel The Breakdown, starring Minka Kelly, Dermot Mulroney and Maggie Grace. Shot on location at Elsing Hall in Suffolk, England, the film was released by Lionsgate on June 21, 2024.

Unlike The Hill, Blackwater Lane received largely unfavorable reviews from critics; outlets including Vague Visages and Letterboxd-featured reviewers criticized its pacing and performances, with one reviewer for Vague Visages writing that Celentano’s direction was inconsistent in key scenes.

The film nonetheless found distribution on streaming platforms including Peacock following its theatrical and digital release.

Celentano has been married to South African-American actress Musetta Vander since 1988. Vander has appeared in several of his films, including Say It in Russian and Breaking Point.
