Henry Nana Boakye Biography: Building the NPP’s Grassroots Machine and His 2026 Vice Chairman Bid

On October 3, 2026, Ghana’s New Patriotic Party is scheduled to elect a new slate of national executives, and Henry Nana Boakye is one of 13 candidates contesting the Vice Chairman position.

It is the latest step in a party career that began when he was 19, working as a polling agent fresh out of secondary school, and has since taken him through nearly every rung of the NPP’s organisational structure.

Henry Nana Boakye, widely known as “Nana B,” is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician who served as National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from 2022 through the party’s 2026 leadership transition.

He is a founding figure of the NPP’s Tertiary Students Confederacy Network (TESCON) and is currently seeking election as the party’s National Vice Chairman.

Early Life and Founding TESCON

Boakye’s political involvement began at age 19, shortly after he completed secondary school at Prempeh College, when he served as a polling agent during Ghana’s 2000 general election.

He went on to study at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa, where, finding no existing student political structure for the NPP on campus, he and a group of fellow students founded the Tertiary Students Confederacy Network (TESCON) chapter there, and he became its founding president for the 2004/2005 academic year.

During the same period, he served as a campaign team member and polling station chairman for the NPP in the Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency.

Rising Through the NPP’s Youth and Organisational Wings

After completing his first degree, Boakye enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study law, where he was again elected TESCON President, for the 2011/2012 academic year, and co-chaired the planning committee for TESCON’s tenth-anniversary celebrations held on the KNUST campus in 2011.

At the national level, he served as Head of Programmes and Events for the NPP’s National Youth Wing and as a member of the party’s strategic communications team during the 2016 general election campaign.

He was elected National Youth Organiser of the NPP at the party’s delegates’ conference in Koforidua on July 8, 2018, defeating Dominic Eduah and Kamal-Deen Abdulai with 423 votes. Internationally, he has twice been elected chairman of the International Young Democracy Union, first in Amsterdam and later in Belgium.

National Organiser (2022–2026) and the 2024 Election

Boakye was elected National Organiser of the NPP at the party’s national delegates’ conference at the Accra Sports Stadium on July 16, 2022, defeating five other contenders.

In that role, he oversaw the party’s grassroots mobilisation and logistics structures through the selection of Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 election, a primary process he was credited with helping organise. The NPP went on to lose the December 7, 2024 general election.

Addressing criticism of his tenure in a September 2026 radio interview, Boakye argued the defeat should not be held against his record, comparing it to President John Mahama’s own earlier electoral loss before his return to the presidency in 2024.

Holding the Government Accountable: The 2026 Drug Trafficking Remarks

As National Organiser, Boakye has continued to act as a public voice for the NPP in opposition.

At a press conference on September 22, 2026, he called on the Mahama government to publicly account for the individuals financing and organising a series of drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana, saying authorities needed to move beyond presenting low-level suspects and instead pursue “a full public account of the financiers and organisers behind every incident.”

He called for a transparent investigation capable of tracing the networks to their financiers and for accountability for any officials found to have compromised Ghana’s ports, airports or borders.

The 2026 Bid for NPP Vice Chairman

Ahead of the NPP’s national executive elections, Boakye declared his candidacy for the party’s Vice Chairman position, framing his 26 years of continuous party service as his central qualification.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on September 30, 2026, he said, “I may be the youngest, but I have served the NPP continuously.”

Describing the founding of TESCON at UMaT in a separate interview that day, he recalled, “There was no TESCON when I gained admission.” As of this writing, the outcome of the October 3, 2026, vote, in which he faces 12 other candidates for the position, had not yet been decided.
