In 2022, at age 31, John Methu became the youngest person ever elected to Kenya’s Senate, winning the Nyandarua County seat on President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
Four years later, that same UDA-elected senator was running the day-to-day affairs of the opposition party built by Ruto’s impeached former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, a political turn that has drawn both acclaim from Gachagua’s supporters and questions about its legality.
John Methu Muhia is a Kenyan politician who has served as Senator for Nyandarua County since 2022. He is also Secretary-General-designate of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), the party formed by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a role he has held since May 2026 while remaining a sitting senator elected under a rival party.

Methu was born and raised in Kinangop Constituency, one of five constituencies making up Nyandarua County.
He has described his family as having no prior involvement in elective politics. He completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education at Goshen High School in Nakuru County in 2012, before enrolling at Pwani University in 2013, where he studied Political Science, graduating in 2017.
Still a university student, Methu made his first bid for the Nyandarua Senate seat in 2017, running under the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party and losing to incumbent Githiomi Mwangi.
The following year, he became Personal Secretary to James Wahome Ndegwa, then Speaker of the Nyandarua County Assembly, a role that kept him close to county politics ahead of the next election cycle.

Methu secured the UDA nomination for the Nyandarua Senate seat after defeating the incumbent Githiomi and lawyer Kinyanjui Theuri in the party primaries.
On August 9, 2022, he won the general election with 185,337 votes, defeating Githiomi decisively, and at 31 became the youngest person elected to Kenya’s Senate.
In November 2024, a Politrack survey ranked him as Kenya’s “most transformative senator,” with an approval rating of 85.2%.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was removed from office through an impeachment process in October 2024.
Methu, though elected under the ruling UDA party, remained one of Gachagua’s most consistent public allies in the period that followed, a stance that set him apart from most of his UDA colleagues and laid the groundwork for his later formal role in Gachagua’s new political movement.
On May 25, 2026, Gachagua appointed Methu as Secretary-General-designate of the Democracy for Citizens Party, replacing Hezron Obaga, and named him the party’s spokesperson pending its formal registration. Announcing the move, Gachagua said, “Senator John Methu, for all practical purposes, is a member of DCP.”
The appointment drew scrutiny because Methu remained a sitting senator elected under UDA, raising questions about whether a sitting legislator could formally lead a rival party.
Methu defended the move, saying there was precedent for politicians taking on roles in other parties while remaining in elected office under their original party.
Methu’s first major assignment as DCP secretary-general-designate was to lead the party’s campaign in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, called after the death of the sitting MP.
The contest, held on July 16, 2026, was marked by violence and allegations of voter bribery serious enough that the electoral commission threatened to postpone or cancel it; at least one death was linked to campaign-period violence.
Working alongside Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, Methu coordinated a ground campaign that Nation Africa reported saw DCP’s candidate defeat the government-backed candidate by nearly 30,000 votes; Gachagua separately claimed the margin was even larger, saying UDA’s candidate received only a small fraction of the vote despite what he described as a multi-billion-shilling government campaign effort. Crediting Methu afterward, Gachagua said, “I left the Ol Kalou campaign to Nyandarua Senator John Methu.”
By September 2026, with Gachagua spending an extended period outside Kenya, including stops in the United States, Methu had become the most visible figure running DCP’s day-to-day political operations, including meeting Nairobi County Assembly members on September 2, 2026.
A party activist quoted by The Star described his role during this period, saying “Methu has kept the fire burning even after his boss left for USA.”
