Viola Davis Biography: Her EGOT, The Woman King and a Packed 2026 Slate
When Viola Davis won a Grammy for the audiobook of her memoir Finding Me on February 5, 2023, she became one of a small handful of performers ever to complete the EGOT, the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony sweep. “I just EGOT!” she shouted from the stage.
More than three years later, she has shown no sign of slowing down: 2026 alone has brought a new Paramount+ thriller series, a courtroom novel co-written with James Patterson, and a first-look production deal with Universal Television.
Viola Davis is an American actress, producer and author. Her accolades include the EGOT and the Triple Crown of Acting, and she is widely known for her roles in Doubt, The Help, How to Get Away with Murder, and Fences, as well as for playing General Amanda Waller in the DC film universe.

Early Life and Education
Davis was born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, and grew up largely in poverty in Central Falls, Rhode Island, one of five sisters.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in theater from Rhode Island College before training at The Juilliard School in New York, where she developed the stage craft that launched her career.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Davis has been married to actor and producer Julius Tennon since 2003; the couple have one daughter, adopted in 2011.
In July 2026, Davis announced a $1.2 million gift toward a new community center in Rhode Island named after her mother, in the area where she grew up.
Discussing the donation, she said, according to BLK Alerts, that her work has “always been about possibility.” In February 2026, she received the Chairman’s Award at the 57th NAACP Image Awards.
Breakthrough Roles: Doubt, The Help and How to Get Away with Murder
After years of stage and supporting screen work following her 1996 film debut in The Substance of Fire, Davis drew wide attention for her brief but powerful performance as Mrs. Miller in Doubt (2008), which earned her Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. She followed it with a lead role as Aibileen Clark in The Help (2011), another Oscar-nominated performance.
In 2014, she began starring as law professor and defense attorney Annalise Keating in ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, a role that made her, in 2015, the first Black woman to win the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The show ran for six seasons, concluding in 2020.
Fences and the Triple Crown of Acting
Davis first won a Tony Award in 2001 for August Wilson’s King Hedley II, and won a second in 2010 for her performance as Rose Maxson in the Broadway revival of Wilson’s Fences.
She reprised the role in the 2016 film adaptation, directed by and co-starring Denzel Washington, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2017.
The combination of her Tony, Oscar and Emmy wins made her one of a small group of performers to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting.
The Woman King and Memoir: Finding Me
In 2022, Davis starred as General Nanisca in The Woman King, a historical action film about the Agojie, an all-female military regiment of the West African Kingdom of Dahomey, a role she also produced through her company, JuVee Productions.
The same year, she published her memoir, Finding Me, detailing her childhood in poverty and her rise in the entertainment industry.
Achieving EGOT (2023)
Davis completed the EGOT on February 5, 2023, winning the Grammy for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording for Finding Me, adding to her existing Emmy, two Tonys and Oscar. She became one of fewer than 20 people to hold EGOT status.
JuVee Productions and a Busy 2026 Slate
Davis has continued to build out both her acting career and her production company, JuVee Productions, which she runs with her husband, Julius Tennon.
In January 2026, she began filming the Amazon MGM thriller Ally Clark at Celtic Studios in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, alongside Jason Clarke and Benjamin Bratt. In March 2026, she and novelist James Patterson released the courtroom drama Judge Stone, centred on a circuit court judge, discussing the book publicly at a 92NY event in New York.
In July 2026, JuVee Productions signed a first-look deal with Universal Global Television, with the romantic drama series Pawn, based on a short story by novelist Kennedy Ryan, set as its first project.
The following month, Paramount+ announced Ascent, a thriller series created by John Logan in which Davis plays Catriona Vail, a corporate crisis fixer; announcing the project, Davis said, according to Variety, “I am overwhelmingly excited about this journey with the great John Logan.”
Davis is also reported to be attached to reprise her role as Amanda Waller in Waller, an HBO Max series continuing from the DC universe’s Peacemaker.
The 2026 Target Halloween Costume Controversy
In August 2026, Davis spoke out after retailer Target apologised for and withdrew a children’s Halloween costume that critics said resembled blackface and minstrel-era caricatures.
According to the Washington Times, Davis rejected Target’s apology as insufficient, writing on Instagram that the imagery echoed a long history of harm, saying, “You have shown us that you are not on OUR side.”
The controversy drew wide social media attention and was reported to have weighed on Target’s stock price at the time.
